Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to encourage drug-free living. It began in 1985 after the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena by drug traffickers in Mexico City. Agent Camarena believed that even though he was only one person, he could make a difference. Each year, there is a unifying theme to bring awareness to the destruction that drugs cause in far too many lives. This year’s theme is Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free.™. Created by Emily King, Chelsea Abbott, and Celise Wicker, 7th graders at Wayland-Cohocton Middle School in Wayland, New York, the theme is a reminder that everyday Americans across the country make significant daily contributions to their communities by being the best they can be because they live Drug-Free!
